Hearing and seeing things that aren?t there is more common than you might think. As part of their series Science & Story, our friends at the World Science Festival are bringing together neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks and award-winning journalist John Hockenberry to discuss Sacks? latest book, released November 6, which explores the bewitching and surreal world of hallucinations.

The conversation, at Cooper Union in New York City, will canvass the rich cultural history and contemporary science of the hallucinatory experience and will also touch on Sacks? own early psychedelic forays that helped convince him to dedicate his life to neurology and to write about the myriad riddles of the human mind.

Sacks will answer select questions tweeted to him after the program and in several follow-up posts on the World Science Festival blog at worldsciencefestival.com. Use the hash tag #AskOliver

Can't wait? Listen to the Nature podcast interview with Sacks by Kerri Smith, Nature?s podcast editor. Sacks recounts some interesting drug-induced trips, including one in which he has a philosophical discussion with a spider.

Sandy-battered NYC, N.J. prepare for new storm

NEW YORK (AP) ? Residents of New York and New Jersey who were flooded out by Superstorm Sandy waited with dread Wednesday and heard warnings to evacuate for the second time in two weeks as another, weaker storm spun toward them and threatened to inundate their homes again or simply leave them shivering in the dark for even longer.

"Everyone has major anxiety after what we just experienced a week ago," said Anthony Ferrante, whose house is less than a thousand feet from the Staten Island shoreline. "I think everybody's freaked out about what happened."

Ferrante was back at his house on Wednesday, waiting for an insurance adjustor. "But if it starts, I'm getting out of here," he said of the nor'easter.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered police to use their patrol car loudspeakers to warn vulnerable residents about evacuating, one of a number of measures that the beleaguered city was taking even as weather experts said Wednesday's nor'easter could be weaker than expected.

"Even though it's not anywhere near as strong as Sandy ? nor strong enough, in normal times, for us to evacuate anybody ? out of precaution and because of the changing physical circumstances, we are going to go to some small areas and ask those people to go to higher ground," Bloomberg said Tuesday.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency put a number to the storm's homeless in New York and New Jersey, saying 95,000 people were eligible for emergency housing assistance. In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, more than 277,000 people have registered for general assistance, the agency said.

In New Jersey, winds were kicking up Wednesday morning and some battered shore communities were ordering mandatory evacuations for later in the day.

Atlantic County, in the southern part of New Jersey, activated its emergency operations center and told residents to restock their emergency supplies.

Officials were waiting for the first high tide around 1 p.m. to see if flooding would occur and also hoping the winds would not lead to more power outages.

"We have almost everyone who possibly can be reconnected back on. The idea we could now be facing power outages again does not come at a good time," county spokeswoman Linda Gilmore said.

Major airlines were scrapping flights in and out of the New York area ahead of the storm.

United, the world's largest airline, suspended most New York City service starting at noon American Airlines was shutting down in New York at 3 p.m. Wednesday, and was also stopping flights to and from Philadelphia at noon.

Most other airlines asked passengers to reschedule their Northeast flights for a later date.

While New York City officials strongly encouraged storm-ravaged communities to seek higher ground, some refused, choosing to stick close to the belongings they have left.

And weather experts had some relatively good news. As the storm moves up the Atlantic coast from Florida, it now is expected to veer farther offshore than earlier projections had indicated.

Storm surges along the coasts of New Jersey and New York are expected to reach perhaps 3 feet, only half to a third of what Hurricane Sandy caused last week. While that should produce only minor flooding, it will still likely cause some erosion problems along the Jersey coast and the shores of Long Island, where Sandy destroyed some protective dunes.

And it still carried the threat of wind gusts that could bring down tree limbs weakened by Sandy. High winds, which could reach 65 mph, could extend inland throughout the day, potentially stalling power restoration efforts or causing further outages.

"Our house is already in shambles. What worse can happen?" said a resigned and overwhelmed Lilly Wu.

Last week, her family huddled upstairs as the flood rose 10 feet inside their four-story Staten Island home; her 7-year-old daughter was "shaking from head to toe." They were rescued the next day.

Now they're bunking in the kids' room and basement at their friends' home in Brooklyn.

Her 6-year-old son has told her: "'I want my bed, Mommy; I want my blanket.'"

The city was closing all parks, playgrounds and beaches, as well as ordering all construction sites to be secured. Tuesday evening, the mayor ordered three nursing homes and an adult care facility evacuated from Queens' vulnerable Rockaway Peninsula because of fears the weather might knock out electricity already being provided by generators. About 620 residents were being moved.

Since the superstorm made landfall more than a week ago, killing many of its more than 100 victims in New York City and New Jersey and leaving millions without power, police said overall crime has actually gone down. There are few reports storm-damaged homes being looted.

But Alex Ocasio wasn't convinced. The nursing home worker planned to ride out the latest storm in his first-floor Rockaway apartment ? even after seeing cars float by his front door during Sandy.

As the water receded, men dressed in dark clothes broke down the door and were surprised to find him and other residents inside, he said.

"They tried to say they were rescue workers, then took off," he said.

He put up a handmade sign ? "Have gun. Will shoot U" ? outside his apartment and started using a bed frame to barricade the door. He has gas, so he keeps the oven on and boils water to stay warm at night.

"It gets a little humid, but it's not bad," he said. "I'm staying. Nothing can be worse than what happened last week."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said it wasn't wise to stay put. "I think your life is more important than property," he said.

The GOP now a ?Mad Men? party in a ?Modern Family? world - The ...

By Laura Chapin
Battleground Colorado

As Republicans survey the wreckage from Tuesday night, the question remains whether they will decide to be a national party or not. Republicans have shrunk to becoming a regional party of older, southern white male evangelicals, neither reflective nor representative of the nation as a whole. In many ways, Obama?s re-election was more significant than his election ? it means 2008 wasn?t a fluke, that American voters really are changing and our national identity is changing along with it.

As GOP strategist Chuck Warren said in an e-mail: ?To be frank, we?re a ?Mad Men? party in a ?Modern Family? world.?

Mitt Romney captured a higher proportion of the white vote in 2012 than John McCain in 2008 ? and still lost. On the flip side, Obama won 79 percent of non-white voters. The country is evolving socially and demographically, and the Republican Party is regressing. They can?t get out from under their own base on immigration, gay rights, reproductive health care, and equal economic opportunity for women.

What happened in Colorado last night was a microcosm of what happened nationally: Republicans lost Latinos, women, younger voters and suburbanites. Romney lost Colorado Latinos ? 14 percent of the electorate ? by 52 points. Colorado Democrats retained their majority in the Senate, and regained their majority in the House.

What this means is that six months after Republican Speaker Frank McNulty shut down the legislature rather than allow a vote on civil unions, Rep. Mark Ferrandino is poised to become the first openly gay Colorado speaker of the House. The Colorado Democratic Caucus now has eight LGBT members and five African-American. Twelve of the 20 Colorado Senate Democrats are female (assuming the results in Evie Hudak?s race hold) and four are Latino. In the state House, 18 of the 37 Democratic members are women and six are Latino.

On the federal level, Congressman Ed Perlmutter won re-election by a wider margin (almost 12 points) in 2012 than he did in 2010 in a swing district that became LESS Democratic after redistricting.. The race was summed up in what is acknowledged as one of the best ads of the cycle: the wife of a Navy Seal thanking Perlmutter for helping her and her injured husband, no questions asked about their politics.

I was asked by a reporter last night if the Democratic successes mean Colorado had turned left. The answer is no; Colorado remains a deeply centrist and pragmatic state, not given to political brand identification, with a third of our electorate unaffiliated. But the Colorado demographics continue to evolve as more people, especially Latinos and college-educated, move here for our quality of life.

Democrats have figured out how to speak to those new voters and new citizens, and Republicans have not. It?ll be interesting to see if Tuesday?s results get lost in translation for the Republican Party.

Laura Chapin is a Democratic strategist and member of the Battleground Colorado panel.

Prenatal testosterone levels influence later response to reward

ScienceDaily (Nov. 5, 2012) ? New findings led by Dr. Michael Lombardo, Prof. Simon Baron-Cohen and colleagues at the University of Cambridge indicate that testosterone levels early in fetal development influence later sensitivity of brain regions related to reward processing and affect an individual's susceptibility to engage in behavior, that in extremes, are related to several neuropsychiatric conditions that asymmetrically affect one sex more than the other.

Although present at low levels in females, testosterone is one of the primary sex hormones that exerts substantial influence over the emergence of differences between males and females. In adults and adolescents, heightened testosterone has been shown to reduce fear, lower sensitivity to punishment, increase risk-tasking, and enhance attention to threat. These effects interact substantially with context to affect social behavior.

This knowledge about the effects of testosterone in adolescence and adulthood suggests that it is related to influencing the balance between approach and avoidance behavior. These same behaviors are heightened in the teenage years and also emerge in extremes in many neuropsychiatric conditions, including conduct disorder, depression, substance abuse, autism, and psychopathy.

Scientists have long known that sex differences influence many aspects of psychiatric disorders, including age of disease onset, prevalence, and susceptibility. For example, according to the World Health Organization, depression is twice as common in women than men, whereas alcohol dependence shows the reverse pattern. In addition to many other factors, sex hormone levels are likely to be important factors contributing to sex differences in psychopathology.

However, research to date has mainly focused on sex hormone levels during adolescence and adulthood, when hormone levels are heightened and built upon substantial prior developmental experience. Sex hormone levels are also heightened during critical periods of fetal brain development, but the impact of such prenatal surges in sex hormone levels on subsequent adult brain and behavioral development has received relatively little attention.

"This study is the first to directly examine whether testosterone in fetal development predicts tendencies later in life to engage in approach-related behavior (e.g., fun-seeking, impulsivity, reward responsivity) and also how it may influence later brain development that is relevant to such behaviors," said first author Lombardo.

In this study, they tested a unique cohort of boys, 8-11 years of age, whose fetal testosterone had been previously measured from amniotic fluid at 13-20 weeks gestation. The boys were scanned with functional magnetic resonance imaging technology to assess changes in brain activity while viewing pictures of negative (fear), positive (happy), neutral, or scrambled faces.

They found that increased fetal testosterone predicted more sensitivity in the brain's reward system to positively, compared to negatively, valenced facial cues. This means that reward-related brain regions of boys with higher fetal testosterone levels respond more to positive facial emotion compared to negative facial emotion than boys who with smaller levels of fetal testosterone.

In addition, increased fetal testosterone levels predicted increased behavioral approach tendencies later in life via its influence on the brain's reward system. Lombardo explained, "This work highlights how testosterone in fetal development acts as a programming mechanism for shaping sensitivity of the brain's reward system later in life and for predicting later tendency to engage in approach-related behaviors. These insights may be especially relevant to a number of neuropsychiatric conditions with skewed sex ratios and which affect approach-related behavior and the brain's reward system."

Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry, commented, "These remarkable data provide new evidence that hormonal exposures early in life can have lasting impact on brain function and behavior."

5 Ways to Quickly Climb Out of a Sales Slump

Using a cloud-based simple CRM and sales tracking app, like Base CRM, is a great way to keep your small business organized and sales slump free.
?
?

Are your sales numbers down?

  • Do you have an aggressive quota to hit?
  • Are you worried about your small business? finances?

Whatever the case is, if you?re in a sales slump, here are some ways to help you get things moving in the right direction ? quickly.

1. Get Organized

Getting organized can often help you clarify the best approaches to alleviate your sales woes. Figure out what leads you have in your sales pipeline, how likely they are to close, and make a plan prioritizing warm and hot leads.? Become best friends with your CRM and sales app ? checking in with it daily. If you aren?t recording your client information, conversations, leads, and sales in a CRM, your sales process hasn?t reached its organizational potential.

An organized desk or workstation will help with the organization of your sales process and? business procedures.

  • Are you missing out on leads buried under papers on your desk?
  • Did a note that should have been entered into your CRM about a client deal get stuck between two desk drawers?

A clear and organized work area, with both digital and physical desktops, can make a difference with your productivity, mindset, and sales.

2. Pick up the Phone

Picking up the phone can be a great way to pull your way out of a sales slump. Try any or all of the following:

  • Call old clients you haven?t spoken with in a while and see how they?re doing.
  • Follow up on cold leads and see if their interest or circumstances have warmed.
  • Talk to vendors and industry contacts and see if they have leads for you.

3. Run a Promotion

Another good sales slump buster is having a sale or some other promotion. This can be a great technique to generate interest from potential new prospects and to re-engage past clients. You may want to get creative with a ?free shipping? ?buy one get one free? deal, etc.? It may mean slimmer margins, temporarily, but could bring about great new opportunities and renewed interest from your client base.

4. Get Online

Is your small business taking advantage of all of the online opportunities available to them? Here are some ways the web can help with your sales slump:

  • Get on social media (Twitter, for instance) and see if you can make some new connections.
  • Conduct research on companies that can be potential clients and engage with them online or setup cold calls.
  • Update your LinkedIn profile. When you do this it will initiate an update about you that will go out in the weekly email to all of your LinkedIn contacts. Seeing your updated skill, your updated job title, or a link to your latest blog post or press release could drum up some interest and result in contacts reaching out to you. (Here?s an article on ways to use LinkedIn to grow your small business)
  • Send out a press release to drum up some interest in something happening with your company. Syndicate it and be sure to promote it on social media.
  • Write a good industry-related article and post it on a relevant industry blog with a byline linked back to your website. This can bring new traffic to your site and new interest to your brand.
  • Create content for your website. New content can bring new customers your way.
  • Consider a Google Adwords pay per click campaign. Setting a small budget and trying it out could be helpful. Google typically offers new Adwords clients a credit of $50 or $100 to get started. Don?t waste it by doing a haphazard campaign. Do your research and hire help if needed.
  • Work on search engine optimization. Down time is a great time to do SEO and online marketing. Just don?t forget to keep it up when you?re busy or you could soon find yourself in another sales slump.

5. Be Positive

Mindset matters. Work with energy, creativity, and a winning attitude.? Don?t resort to cheesy sales pitches and don?t work with desperation. If you do, you?ll turn off potential and existing clients.

Work with the mindset that the next call you make could be the beginning of an upswing ? and the end of your sales slump!

Proportional VR experiment shrinks man down to rat size, lets us play games with rodents

Sure, you can always play catch with the dog, but what kind of game can you play with a caged rodent? Well, "find the poster," apparently. A team of researchers from Universities in Spain, Germany, Austria, England and the US have put together a virtual reality system designed to let humans interact with rats at the rodent's scale, challenging human participants to find and lead the rodent to a unmarked goal. According to a paper published in PLoS One participants were "beamed" into the rat's environment by linking a head-mounted display and joystick to a rat-sized telepresence robot. Human players were then treated to a proportionally accurate representation of the game arena. The rat was there too, tracked with an overhead camera and represented by a human avatar.

Participants were tasked with coaxing their opponent in front one of three posters in attempt to sleuth out which one represents the "winning" position. When both players are in front of the correct mystery poster, a bell sounds and the game ends. The game was primarily created to test a scaled immersive virtual reality teleoperator system, but researchers are optimistic the technology could be used to observe animal behavior from a new perspective. Check out the setup in action after the break, or read on through to the source link below for a detailed description of how mankind and some of nature's smaller creatures can get along in a virtual space.

By Blood & Stars
??????????????????????

Kalita Vessh
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

It was called Peacekeeping. Expeditions ventured forth out into the unknown to problem solve for other nations. It was to prevent those foreign dominions from self-destructing like they had, or so they claimed. They had been singing the same tune for millennia, they had been fooling themselves for too long. Even before Earth was a distant memory they had claimed good intensions when crying for war; history repeated. Then it was human versus human. Now, with their mother planet uninhabitable, man has taken to the stars. With each new world they would leave their thumbprint, instilling their teachings and knowledge to all races they stumbled upon. But everyone knew what they were really doing; conquering.

Kalita found herself on the Galactical Peacekeeping Alliance?s latest acquisition. The two suns were unforgiving, air thick and humid, and while she found herself on land the majority of the planet was covered in endless ocean. Scholars had named the world ?Lapis Maris? or the Stone Sea. Employed agents of the GPA, like she, had nicknamed it Seaworld. It was unknown to her if the locals had their own name for the place, but she somehow doubted that anyone had stopped to ask.

It was only recently that the young woman had found herself of the surface of the sweltering planet. The initial war had died down, with the majority of the mainland settlements being obtained either by force or persuasion. Somewhere in the water was a local rebellion group itching to take them out, but for the time being a sort of understanding had formed and with it a lull; they kept the water, humans kept the land. The break in fighting had allowed dignitaries to begin re-working the ruling body to form an easily understood government body along with the natives that had succumbed. While Kalita understood that it was some variation of an aristocracy the details were a little fuzzy greatly due to her lack of interest. She had been brought to Seaworld for her particular skill set and politics wasn?t one of them.

In creating a new nation there was always a bit of upset at the beginning. Humans, in their many years of experienced world-building, had learned that distraction was the best method in smoothing things over. Distractions as of late had turned into games: Gladiators. The warrior matches killed several birds with one stone; entertained the populace, rid them of unsavory criminals and allowed them to study the various (and intimidating) creatures of their newest home. Prisoners, charged with assorted crimes, were trained and pitted against the most terrifying beasts from the ocean depths. And that?s where she came in.

Kalita?s task at hand was to whip the unruly into fighting shape. Her duty was to get the games to be as entertaining as possible, to not disappoint the crowd by her Gladiators dying too quickly. While it was no small task to break men she was more than qualified. It wasn?t her first rodeo, and it wouldn?t be the last. Although with a flick of her wrist she had made men cower at her feet a Gladiator required trust and respect. It was a long journey ahead of them.

?Domina.? The title made her countenance stiffen slightly as she paused, turning to see the speaker. Even before eyes beset the tall, blonde man she knew the voice as well as any other; Deltin Belceraw. He was an ?elected? official of the new world of Lapis Mares, awarded title and land due to wealth and services on other endeavors. While the man was courteous and friendly, and very much her senior in rank, she didn?t like him any the more; politicians left a certain distaste on her tongue.

?Viscount.? She replied, emotionless, as he fell in stride with her.

?On time as always, I see. Such a lovely day for festives to begin, don?t you think?? He was babbling, mindless small talk that never amused Kalita. She didn?t even bother to nod her head or shrug. The noble waved his hand, flashing his many glistening rings in the sunlight. Deltin reminded her of a peacock?always decked to the nines and strutting around. He smiled. ?Your brutes are ready for you.?

It was then they came to a halt. They were inside a giant coliseum that had been built recently to emulate those of the past. Rows of men, all chained, were standing before them. The prisoners, all from the planet, each had some sort of aquatic qualities like all the natives of the world. She cleared her throat, clasping her hands behind her back.

?I am your Domina.?

No greetings, no hellos. Straight to the point.

?I will be training you to become Gladiators. You will take part in matches where you will fight for your lives. Most of you will not survive. If you pay attention, try your hardest, entertain the crowd and have a bit of luck then you may be rewarded. You will learn to trust me. We will earn each other?s respect. I will not tolerate insubordination. ?

And then there was quiet as she waited for their reply.

Gaming Desktop, 800-1250$ Are AMD Processors okay to go with ...

I am looking to get a gaming desktop to replace my old alienware lappy. I saw that the AMD FX processors are not up to par with the Intel ones, I was wondering if it is reasonable to go with them since I am on a budget. I want this computer to mostly game, and if I get get a better graphics card with the money, that seems worth it to me. I am looking at an IBUYPOWER one that would have an FX 8310 (or something close) with dual 7870's for 1250. I also found one on newegg that has an FX6100 with a single 7850 for 700. But it has a single PCI X16 slot so I could not put crossfire in later, which I would love to be able to do. I would appreciate any thoughts and recommendations. Also, I would love to hear about any computers I have missed that fit my budget

==========

No

Windows 7 or 8 64bit is preferred.

Build Quality and Design

Pets Sit At The Dinner Table (PHOTOS)

We know pet owners really love their pets. Some cats and dogs get treated just as well as children. They get pet sitters -- so they don't get lonely. They have outfits to keep them stylish. And, it looks like they even get a seat at the dinner table. Yep, pets are just like us.

Don't get us wrong, we here at HuffPost Taste are big fans of pets (learning that watching cat videos made us productive was music to our kitty-centric ears). But being food people, we believe the dinner table to be a fairly sacred place. You might say we have a strict humans-only policy. That is, until we saw how cute these pets looked siting in our seats.

Granville White won the LCLYF Championship! | Granville ...

Posted on November 2nd, 2012 by Lara

It was rainy and cold under the lights at Watkins High School Sunday night as the Granville White 5th/6th grade football team took on Licking Heights Maroon for the Licking County Youth Football League Varner Division Championship.? Both Granville and Licking Heights entered the game at 8-0 on the season and both boasted powerful offenses.? However, the game quickly turned to a battle in the trenches as the field became a mud bath. ?Granville?s defense shut down Licking Heights on their first possession then used running back Tommy Wolfe to pound the ball down the field to set up a 38 yard touchdown run by quarterback Cameron Crouch.? Licking Heights answered on the next drive with a 58 yard run by running back William Chatman III.? Late in the second quarter, Granville?s Nate Stone chased down Licking Height?s quarterback Jacob Righter causing a fumble that was advanced to the goal line by lineman Colin Freeman.? Crouch took it in for the score and Granville went into halftime leading 13-7.

As the rain continued in the second half, the deteriorating conditions caused 8 fumbles between the teams.? Wolfe stripped the ball from Chatman early in the half.? Then Crouch again escaped the grasp of the Licking Height defenders to put his team up by two touchdowns but Chatman was not done yet.? He scampered 65 yards with more than five minutes remaining in the game to cut the deficit to 6.? Granville?s defense, however, proved to be too strong and Crouch added an insurance score with 38 seconds to go to seal the victory.? Crouch ended the game with 144 yards on 24 carries and Wolfe had 109 yards on 21 carries.

?Great defense got us to this point.? We put a huge emphasis on blocking and tackling from day one and it paid off,? said Coach Trevor Wolfe after the game.? Granville?s defense combined for 5 fumble recoveries including 3 by Trent Compton and 1 each from Nate Large and Colin Freeman.? ?The thing that makes me happiest is that we played as a team and everyone contributed to the win? said Coach Wolfe. ?Our center Parker Hilaman did a fantastic job snapping the ball, especially considering the weather conditions.? The weather kept us from using half of our offensive plays, including a pretty darn good passing attack.? It was a true joy coaching this special group of boys, they made my job easy.?

Granville produced 3 of the top 8 teams in this year?s Varner division A-flight playoffs.? The championship was the first for Wolfe and the second in a row for Granville teams.

U.S. FDA finds bacteria in New England Compounding drugs

(Reuters) - U.S. health officials have found bacteria in lots of an injected steroid and a heart drug made by New England Compounding Center, the pharmacy linked to contaminated steroids that have claimed the lives of at least 28 people.

The Food and Drug Administration said it identified different types of bacteria in three separate recalled batches of NECC's preservative-free betamethasone and in a single batch of NECC-supplied cardioplegia solution.

Betamethasone is an injectable steroid, while cardioplegia is used during heart surgery.

The FDA had previously confirmed the presence of a deadly fungus in two different NECC batches of a different injectable steroid tied to the national fungal meningitis outbreak. That drug, preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate, was used to treat back and joint pain.

The agency said it did not know how significant the bacterial contamination was in terms of the risk for human disease and said it had not received reports of confirmed cases of infection related to the organisms found in the two products.

However, the findings "reinforce the FDA's concern about the lack of sterility in products produced at NECC's compounding facility," the agency said in a statement.

Federal health officials previously said they were investigating whether two other NECC products could be linked to fungal infections in three patients, including two who had undergone heart surgery.

NECC, located in Framingham, Massachusetts, shut down in early October and recalled all of its products.

The FDA said tests for fungus in the lots of betamethasone and cardioplegia are still underway.

The latest tally from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists 386 cases of fungal meningitis and 28 deaths linked to injections of NECC steroids.
